There are currently five volunteer chaplains supporting the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Each chaplain is on call for one-week intervals and they share a 2004 Dodge Durango. The chaplains respond to calls involving deaths when spiritual care is requested and support line firefighters after especially traumatic calls.
The Durango has more than 165,000 miles and it has needed significant maintenance in the past year. The vehicle broke down very early one morning as a chaplain was returning home from a call for service, which forced the chaplain to walk home. Chaplains respond in all weather conditions and at all hours, so an all-wheel drive vehicle is ideal. |
